Oya Yılmaz Ghahary Kermany
Connect Program Fellow Fall 2020; Senior Facilitator
Country of origin: Turkey
Date started with Soliya: 2018
Education and field of work: I studied International Relations and for years after graduation, I've been looking for a medium to use my education effectively. Then I met Soliya and ever since I'm enjoying working on the most pressing issues of our day with young people from all around the world! I'm also working as an interpreter and playwright for over fifteen years. Learning new languages is my passion and I specifically translate theatre plays from different cultures. It feels wonderful to hear my words from actors! Meanwhile, I'm pursuing my Master's Degree in children's theatre as a hobby!
One accomplishment you're proud of: I'm proud of being a part of this growing international community! I feel I'm recreating myself on a daily basis with the power of dialogue and collaboration. Working and connecting with all these amazing people has helped the communication skills that I use in my daily life too.
What about Soliya inspires/motivates you to be involved? It's more than an organization, it's a family! I've become friends with tens of inspiring and successful people from various backgrounds in just two years and I feel their support every day. Working in such a peaceful and dynamic environment unlocks your potential and encourages you to learn and grow more. For instance, now I'm taking courses on conflict transformation, intercultural communication, and many other subjects whenever I have the time. Learning is more exciting than before because I know every new skill we acquire comes in handy in our field.
What can you be found doing when not working/facilitating/training? You can see me making puppets and theatre masks most of the time! I enjoy making concrete and cute props that can actually be used on stage. I also enjoy diving into modern Japanese literature, painting, and singing when I'm alone! :)
Favorite food: Anything sour and spicy! I prefer pickles to chocolate anytime. Mexican food, especially tacos with guacamole, is my all-time favorite.
