Rianne C ten Veen

1YC Fellow Summer 2020; Senior Facilitator; Facilitation Fellow, Spring 2019

Country of origin: The Netherlands

Date started with Soliya: 2015

Education and field of work: I have an interdisciplinary education (LLM, MA, MSc, PGDip, PGCert) and work experience (starting in the private sector, through third/ NGO sector and education, now as freelancer working in several of these). Intercultural matters have fascinated me from a young age. Born in The Netherlands, due to my father’s work I grew up in several countries (US, UK, Argentina). As an adult, I always sought international, diverse contexts, such as working in humanitarian aid for over a decade and teaching through a university specialised in distance education.

What about Soliya inspires/motivates you to be involved? The bright light in an often dark world of populism/ nationalism/ ‘othering', the positive approach to diversity, seeing the world the way astronauts see it, and doing something concrete and constructive about this (the online dialogue opportunities!). I believe a just, green world is possible and that motivates me in my facilitating: not to convince, but enable people to reflect and learn from each other.

What can you be found doing when not working/facilitating/training? Hopefully turning my garden into a food forest (though I am also quite addicted to being online).

Favorite food: Salad, with as many veggie ingredients as it’s possible to squeeze in a bowl.
